Động cơ xe nóng có thể do thiếu nước làm mát hoặc bị rò rỉ nhưng vẫn có thể kiểm soát tình hình bằng những kỹ năng đơn giản. Nếu nhận thấy dấu hiệu cỗ máy bắt đầu quá nóng, tài xế nên thực hiện những bước dưới đây theo để giúp dừng xe an toàn nhất.
Trường hợp 1: Nếu có thể dừng xe an toàn
Bước 1: Dừng xe
Ngay khi phát hiện ra kim chỉ nhiệt độ động cơ quay tới chữ H (viết tắt của Hot: nóng), tài xế hãy tìm cách lập tức tấp vào lề đường để dừng xe an toàn, tắt máy để động cơ nguội. Với những ngày nóng nên tăng cường để ý chỉ dấu nhiệt độ. Nếu nhìn thấy hơi nước bốc lên từ nắp ca-pô phải dừng xe ngay.
Bước 2: Mở nắp ca-pô
Mở nắp ca-pô xe để tạo khoảng trống cho hơi nóng động cơ thoát ra ngoài nhanh hơn. Một số xe có chốt ca-pô gần két làm mát nên tài xế cần cẩn thận, lót tay trước khi mở nắp để đảm bảo an toàn.

Sau khi đã chờ cho động cơ và hệ thống làm mát nguội bớt, lúc này hãy mở nắp két nước để kiểm tra. Hầu hết các xe đều có một bình chứa nước để dẫn vào két nước, có thể quan sát bằng mắt thường mực nước có đầy hay không
.Nếu xe có bình chứa, hãy đổ đầy lượng dung dịch làm mát, nếu trường hợp khẩn cấp không có dung dịch làm mát có thể thay bằng nước sạch.
Nếu xe không có bình chứa, bắt buộc chờ cho hệ thống làm mát nguội hẳn rồi mới mở nắp để thêm dung dịch hoặc nước.
Bước 5: Tìm kiếm vết rò rỉ
Khá nhiều trường hợp xe bị quá nóng do hệ thống làm mát bị rò rỉ ở đường ống, đầu xi-lanh hay các lá mỏng ở két nước do bị đá văng lên… Nếu không thể kiểm tra hay đưa xe tới một cửa hàng sửa chữa gần nhất để thợ kỹ thuật xem xét.
Bước 6: Xác định xem có thể đi tiếp hay không
Nếu xe đơn thuần là bị thiếu nước làm mát và đổ đầy trở lại thì có thể đi tiếp, nhưng nếu xe cạn khô nước mát mà không xác định được nguyên nhân, tốt nhất hãy gọi cứu hộ. Nhưng nếu không thể gọi bất cứ trợ giúp nào thì phải làm sao?
Trường hợp 2: Bắt buộc phải lái xe tiếp
Nếu phát hiện xe quá nóng nhưng không thể làm gì và bắt buộc phải lái xe tiếp, tài xế nên tuân thủ những bước dưới đây.
Bước 1: Tắt điều hòa
Hệ thống điều hòa làm việc kéo theo động cơ làm việc quá tải dẫn tới nhanh nóng.
Bước 2: Chuyển sang chế độ nóng
Bật chế độ sưởi lên hết cỡ, mở quạt to nhất. Nếu trời nóng, hãy xoay cửa thông gió ra phía cửa sổ, hạ kính để khí nóng thoát bớt ra ngoài. Bởi lẽ, hệ thống này sử dụng sức nóng của động cơ để sưởi ấm không khí trong xe, do đó nếu lượng nhiệt này thoát ra càng nhiều, càng nhanh thì động cơ càng nhanh mát.
Bước 3: Không di chuyển nhiều
Khi đã ở vào tình trạng động cơ nóng, không di chuyển dài như lúc xe bình thường. Thay vào đó, tần suất dừng nghỉ sẽ nhiều hơn.
Bước 4: Tắt động cơ, nhưng không tắt điện
Xoay chìa khóa tắt động cơ nhưng không tắt hẳn hệ thống điện, để bộ sưởi tiếp tục làm việc, sẽ giải phóng nhanh hơn khí nóng ra khỏi động cơ.
Bước 5: Đi ở tốc độ vừa phải
Không đi nhanh, dừng nhanh, mà đi chậm ở tốc độ vừa phải. Tăng tốc làm tăng tải trọng khiến động cơ càng nhanh nóng.
Bước 6: Sử dụng kỹ xảo
Nếu xe sử dụng quạt tản nhiệt dẫn động thông qua dây đai (thường ở những xe dẫn động cầu sau hoặc dẫn động 4 bánh), hãy thực hiện phương pháp sau khi dừng xe ở đèn đỏ. Đẩy cần số về N hoặc P (số tự động), đạp nhẹ chân ga cho lên vòng tua khoảng 2.000 vòng/phút, giữ chân ga ở ngưỡng đó khoảng một phút. Cách làm này giúp quạt quay nhanh hơn, giải phóng bớt khí nóng.
Nhưng với những xe có quạt tản nhiệt điện tử (thường ở xe dẫn động cầu trước) thì phương pháp này không có tác dụng.
Bước 7: Nếu có thể hãy đợi khi đường hết đông
Xe đang bị nóng mà di chuyển vào đường đông chỉ làm mọi việc thêm tồi tệ vì thời gian di chuyển lâu hơn đồng thời không tận dụng được gió mát. Vì thế nếu có thể hãy tấp xe vào lề và đợi tới khi đường hết tắc.
